Loyalty & Rewards
Smile.io vs LoyaltyLion: Honest Comparison [2027 Edition]
Smile.io and LoyaltyLion are two of the longest-running Shopify loyalty apps, but they sell very different things.
Smile.io is self-serve software with a published price at almost every order volume. LoyaltyLion pairs its software with a service team that builds your loyalty page and Klaviyo flows, and it quotes most stores individually.
Both apps changed in 2026. Smile.io dropped its $49 Starter and $599 Pro plans, and LoyaltyLion added a free plan. We’ve used their current plans throughout this comparison.
The differences become clearer when you look at pricing, setup, Klaviyo, and what happens when you run multiple storefronts.
Smile.io vs LoyaltyLion: Our top pick
For most single-store merchants, Smile.io is the stronger option. It’s cheaper at almost every order volume where both apps publish a price, and you can launch it yourself in an afternoon. But LoyaltyLion is the better choice in a few specific situations.
Choose Smile.io: Smile.io makes more sense if you’re running one Shopify store, want to know exactly what you’ll pay, and are comfortable building the program yourself. It’s also the easier choice if you need VIP tiers or multi-location POS without moving to a custom-priced plan.
Choose LoyaltyLion: LoyaltyLion is worth considering when loyalty is part of a larger retention strategy. If you run several storefronts, rely heavily on Klaviyo, or want specialists to handle the setup, its higher price can buy you more than just another set of features.
Look beyond both if you need VIP tiers for less than $199 a month, or run a low-AOV store with high order counts. Both apps price by monthly orders, so 5,000 orders at $15 cost the same to run as 5,000 orders at $150.
What does each app offer?
Both apps cover points, rewards, referrals, and VIP tiers. The differences are in who does the setup work, what each plan unlocks, and how far each app goes beyond a single storefront.
Smile.io
Smile.io is built for merchants who set up and run the program themselves. Points and referrals are on every plan, VIP tiers start on Growth, and Shopify POS works on every plan, including Free. It’s a self-serve product, so most of the setup and day-to-day decisions stay with your team. Smile has more than 90,000 merchants, including Liquid Death and Death Wish Coffee.
The trade-off is that your team owns the work. That’s a good fit for a single-store brand under about $5M a year that wants to launch quickly without paying for outside implementation.
LoyaltyLion
LoyaltyLion sells loyalty software with a service team attached. On Classic, the team designs your loyalty page, which LoyaltyLion values at $1,500, and builds your Klaviyo flows. It counts LEGO and Diesel among more than 10,000 brands, and it also supports platforms beyond Shopify, including BigCommerce, Magento, WooCommerce, and Salesforce Commerce Cloud.
The appeal is less about having another loyalty feature and more about getting help putting the program to work. That makes it a stronger fit for brands above $5M a year with a CRM manager, a Klaviyo-led retention strategy, or several affiliated storefronts. Every plan also includes an MCP connection, so you can query loyalty data from AI assistants such as Claude.
How we compared Smile.io and LoyaltyLion
A high star rating and a free plan don’t tell you much about which app will suit your store. We wanted to know what it actually takes to run each app, what happens as your order volume grows, and where merchants run into problems:
- Features: Whether each app supports the customer journeys and sales channels you need, and on which plan.
- Pricing: What you’ll pay as order volume grows, including overage, add-ons, and contract terms.
- Integrations: How each app works with Klaviyo, Shopify POS, and other parts of your retention stack.
- Merchant feedback: What reviewers say about each app and vendor across sources such as the Shopify App Store, Reddit, G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot.
- Migration: What transfers between the two apps and what has to be rebuilt.
We checked prices, limits, and ratings against each vendor’s pricing page and Shopify App Store listing on 5 November 2026. Approximate, unpublished, or third-party prices are identified as such.

How do Smile.io and LoyaltyLion compare on features?
Both apps cover the basics of a Shopify rewards program, so the decision usually comes down to how many storefronts you run and how much of your retention runs through Klaviyo. Start with multi-store, because it can settle the comparison on its own.
Which app is better for multiple stores?
LoyaltyLion is the only one of the two with a native option. Cross-store rewards on its Plus plan let a customer earn points in one affiliated storefront and redeem them in another.
Smile.io has no cross-store program, so each storefront runs its own. A brand selling from separate UK and EU Shopify stores would end up with two programs and two points balances.
Best for: LoyaltyLion, if you run more than one storefront and can budget for a quote-only Plus plan.
Which app has the better Klaviyo integration?
LoyaltyLion goes further, particularly if Klaviyo is central to your retention strategy. Its Classic team builds the flows for you, while Plus adds Advanced Klaviyo Events.
Smile.io syncs points and tier status to Klaviyo profiles, but you build the flows yourself. Below Growth, Klaviyo also counts against Smile’s one-integration cap.
Best for: The question is whether you want an integration or someone to help you use it. Smile gives you the data; LoyaltyLion does more of the implementation work.
Which app is better for Shopify POS?
Smile.io is more accessible. POS works on every plan, including Free, so retailers with several shops don’t need an upper tier.
LoyaltyLion’s Classic plan supports one location, and multi-location POS starts on Advanced, which is quote-only. On Smile’s side, one Canadian merchant reported in February 2026 that redeeming points at the till was awkward, so test a real redemption before rolling it out.
Best for: For a retailer with several physical locations, Smile.io is the easier option to start with.
Which app makes VIP tiers easier to access?
Smile.io has the clearer entry point. Tiers come with Growth at $199 a month, along with reports that break down spend and order frequency by tier.
LoyaltyLion’s pricing page calls Classic tiers an optional add-on and doesn’t publish a price, while its Shopify listing says they’re included. Advanced includes them outright. If tiers matter on Classic, get the terms in writing.
Best for: Smile.io, because its tiers have a list price.
Which app offers more flexible earning rules?
Smile.io gives smaller stores more ways to build a rewards program without moving immediately to an expensive plan. Free covers purchases and customer actions, while paid plans add rewards such as free products, subscriptions, and gift cards.
LoyaltyLion keeps its free program simpler. You need Classic for custom earning rules, while Advanced adds more campaign options, including product-page points, Loyalty Challenges, and scheduled bonuses. Some advanced capabilities cost extra, too: competitor sites report custom earning rules at about $1,000 a month.
Best for: Smile.io, for more reward types at a lower price.
Which app is better for referrals?
Smile.io is the better starting point, because referrals run on every plan, including Free. Do pay attention to reward conditions, though: one January 2026 Capterra reviewer reported spammers creating fake discount codes. So, set your reward conditions carefully before you launch referrals on your Shopify store.
LoyaltyLion doesn’t include referrals on its free plan. You add them as a paid feature or upgrade to Classic. If referrals are the main reason you want an app, compare both against the best Shopify referral apps.
Best for: Smile.io, because you can run referrals for free.
Which app is better for checkout redemption?
Neither has an advantage. Both apps need a Shopify Plus store for points at checkout. Smile also needs Growth or above, and its checkout redemption works in English only. If checkout redemption is a requirement, your Shopify plan matters as much as your loyalty app choice.
Best for: Tie.
Which app has better analytics?
Smile.io makes it easier to connect loyalty activity with program costs. It has 10 reports on Free, 25 on Growth, and 30+ on Plus. Growth adds Performance Benchmarks, which compare your repeat purchase rate and reward cost with other brands in your industry.
LoyaltyLion gives you loyalty analytics and customer segments on Free, with loyalty-attributed revenue available on Classic. But attributed revenue isn’t the same as profitability. A HouseofDogs reviewer said the dashboard shows nothing about what the program costs to run. Without reward costs beside member revenue, you can’t see whether the program pays for itself.
Best for: Smile.io, because reward cost sits next to revenue.
Which app is easier to customise?
Smile.io gives you full branding control on Free and API access on Plus at a published $999 a month. That makes it easier to understand what you’re getting into if you plan to connect loyalty with a custom storefront or internal system.
LoyaltyLion designs your Classic loyalty page for you, but limited customisation is its most-cited drawback on G2, and API access sits on the top tier or as a reported add-on.
Best for: Smile.io, because it’s easier to evaluate and its API price is published.
Which app is easier to set up and support?
Smile.io is quicker to launch yourself. A marketer can set up a loyalty program on it in an afternoon, though US merchant Moehair reported support replies taking two to three days in May 2026.
LoyaltyLion states three to four weeks for a specialist-led setup and scores 9.3 for quality of support on G2. Even so, US retailer AKIRA wrote in April 2026 that issues took days or weeks to resolve.
Best for: Tie. Smile.io is better if you want to get started quickly, while LoyaltyLion does the work for you but draws more complaints after launch.
How much do Smile.io and LoyaltyLion cost?
Smile.io is cheaper at almost every order volume where both apps publish a price. Both bill by monthly orders, but Smile publishes a price for every band, while LoyaltyLion publishes only $0 and $199 and quotes every store above 500 orders.
Smile.io pricing
| Plan | Price | Order limit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 200/month | New stores testing points and referrals |
| Essential | $15/month | 500/month | Small stores adding free-product rewards |
| Standard | $79/month | 1,000/month | Stores adding subscription and gift-card rewards |
| Growth | $199/month | 2,500/month, then $20 per 100 | Brands that need VIP tiers and unlimited integrations |
| Plus | $999/month, billed annually | 7,500/month, then $5 per 100 | High-volume brands that need API access |
| Enterprise | Custom, billed annually | Unlimited | Brands above $40M a year |
There are two things to check before signing:
- Plan jumps: Smile doesn’t charge overage on Free, Essential, or Standard. But once you’re processing more than 1,000 orders, you can face a jump from $79 to $199 rather than a small incremental fee.
- Plus vs Growth: Don’t automatically stay on Growth as your order volume increases. Plus has a higher monthly starting price, but its overage rate is much lower. Once you’re around 6,500 orders, it can work out cheaper, provided you’re comfortable with annual billing.
LoyaltyLion pricing
| Plan | Price | Order limit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 400/month recommended | Small stores that only need points on purchases |
| Classic | $199/month | 500/month (about 625 before review) | Brands that want a done-for-you page and Klaviyo flows |
| Advanced | Quote | Custom | Brands that need included VIP tiers or multi-location POS |
| Plus | Quote | 10,000+/month | Multi-store brands that want cross-store rewards |
LoyaltyLion doesn’t charge a per-order overage fee. Instead, it reviews your pricing if your average monthly volume exceeds your contracted limit by more than 25% for three consecutive months. On Classic, that gives you some room above the 500-order allowance, about 625 orders, before that conversation.
There are three other things to check before signing:
- Contract length: Paid plans run for 12 months, custom pricing can increase at renewal, and some features may cost extra.
- Price increases: A ten-year customer reported yearly increases of about 20% on a custom plan.
- Add-on costs: API access and Classic VIP tiers deserve particular attention during negotiations.
Which free plan gives you more?
LoyaltyLion’s free plan has the looser limit, but Smile’s has more program. LoyaltyLion’s help centre, updated 22 September 2026, says free members earn points only for creating an account, placing an order, and visiting the store.
| Feature | Smile.io Free | LoyaltyLion Free |
|---|---|---|
| Order limit | 200/month | 400/month recommended, not enforced |
| Ways to earn | Purchases and actions | Account creation, orders, and store visits |
| Referrals | Yes | Paid feature |
| Rewards | Discounts and free shipping | Money-off vouchers |
| Analytics | 10 reports | Loyalty analytics and segments |
| Paid-feature trial | None | 14 days, then switched off |
| Next plan up | Essential, $15/month | Classic, $199/month |
Here’s how that works out in practice:
- Fewer than 200 orders: Smile is the stronger free option if you want referrals and more ways to reward customers.
- 200–400 orders: LoyaltyLion’s free plan is the better price if you only want points on purchases. Smile costs $15 here, for a fuller program.
- Ready to upgrade: Smile’s next step costs $15 a month, while LoyaltyLion jumps to $199. That’s a difference of $2,208 over a year.
That gap shapes how long merchants stay free. Avernic Smoke Shop, which had used LoyaltyLion’s free plan for about five years, wrote in November 2025 that there was “0 chance that i would pay them $200 a month”. If neither free plan fits, compare more free Shopify loyalty apps.
How do costs change as order volume grows?
The monthly price matters less than how quickly you outgrow a plan. A store processing 400 orders has a very different buying decision from one processing 5,000. Here’s where the two apps start to separate.
| Orders/month | Smile.io | LoyaltyLion | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 | Essential, $15 | Free, $0 | LoyaltyLion is free but thin; Smile’s program is fuller for $15 |
| 500 | Essential, $15 | Free, $0, or Classic, $199 | Smile gives a full program for $15 |
| 1,000 | Standard, $79 | Quote | Smile publishes a price; LoyaltyLion needs a call |
| 1,500 | Growth, $199 | Quote | Smile’s Growth includes VIP tiers |
| 3,000 | Growth + overage, $299 | Quote | A LoyaltyLion quote has to beat $299 or justify the gap with service |
| 5,000 | Growth + overage, $699 | Quote | LoyaltyLion’s service starts to earn its price |
| 10,000 | Plus + overage, $1,124 (annual) | Quote | Smile Plus for one store; LoyaltyLion for multi-store brands |
The change happens as order volume grows. At 1,000–5,000 orders, Smile.io gives you a published price, while LoyaltyLion requires a conversation with sales. At 10,000 orders, staying on Smile’s Growth plan would cost $1,699, so check Plus once you pass about 6,500 orders. LoyaltyLion has no public price above about 625 orders.
SaaSworthy reports about $399 a month for LoyaltyLion Classic at 2,000 orders, but that’s not a vendor-confirmed price. Treat it as a reference point.
Neither includes the discounts, free products, or other rewards you’ll fund, so, budget for those separately.
What do merchants say about Smile.io and LoyaltyLion?
Both apps score 4.6 on G2, but LoyaltyLion’s share of one-star Shopify reviews is more than three times Smile’s. We only count platforms with 30 or more reviews for an app, because smaller samples swing on one angry customer.
| Review source | Smile.io | LoyaltyLion |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify App Store rating | 4.9 (4,663 reviews) | 4.7 (548 reviews) |
| One-star share on Shopify | 1.5% (69 of 4,663) | 5.1% (28 of 548) |
| G2 rating | 4.6 (471 reviews) | 4.6 (639 reviews) |
| Capterra rating | 4.9 (67 reviews) | Excluded, 19 reviews |
| Trustpilot rating | Excluded, 3 reviews | 4.5 (57 reviews) |
Positive reviews point to different strengths. Smile’s merchants often mention conversion, with one January 2026 Capterra reviewer saying program members converted at twice the rate of other repeat customers. LoyaltyLion’s often name individual staff, such as UK retailer Blink!, whose onboarding manager handled code changes for them in August 2026.
The complaints also point to different risks:
- Smile.io: Merchants raise plan gates. Einstein’s Attic said in May 2026 that once it needed Growth features, the choice was $199 a month or cancelling.
- LoyaltyLion: Merchants raise price and contracts. Tailored Equestrian said in April 2024 that its quote of $583 a month seemed to come from nowhere.
Both apps collect billing complaints, but for different reasons. Smile.io’s frustration often comes when a growing store hits a feature gate and suddenly needs a more expensive plan. LoyaltyLion’s frustration is more about uncertainty, such as what the next contract will cost, and which features are included. If you’re already on LoyaltyLion and weighing a move, now is a good time to compare the LoyaltyLion alternatives rather than waiting until you’re locked into another year.
What our Shopify loyalty app review research found
Individual merchant reviews show what customers experience with each app. Our wider research across 3,410 reviews of 25 Shopify loyalty apps helps put those experiences in context. Across the category, merchants mention support more often than rewards features: 70.6% of written reviews discussed support, compared with 27.2% mentioning rewards mechanics. Most mentions were positive or neutral, accounting for 97.4% of support mentions and 91.9% of rewards mentions.
Smile.io earned praise in 97 of 106 support mentions and 32 of 37 rewards mentions. LoyaltyLion received praise in 98 of 104 support mentions and 77 of 85 rewards mentions. Its setup support also stood out, 48.6% of its reviews mentioned setup or onboarding, compared with 19.7% across the study.
The one- and two-star reviews add context. Smile.io’s recurring complaints involved slow or unhelpful support (13 reviews), pricing or billing (12), and missing features or usability (9).
LoyaltyLion’s eight low-rated reviews most often mentioned pricing or billing (4), bugs (3), and slow support (3). These themes can overlap within a review.
Overall, Smile.io’s main watchouts are plan costs and feature limitations whereas LoyaltyLion’s are pricing and technical issues.
How do you migrate between Smile.io and LoyaltyLion?
Switching loyalty apps isn’t just a matter of moving points balances. You can transfer those by CSV in either direction, but program rules, integrations, and points history need extra work. The biggest practical difference is account activation: Smile can hold points for guest customers, while LoyaltyLion requires each customer to activate a store account first. Checkout full smile migration guide here.
| Data or feature | Smile.io to LoyaltyLion | LoyaltyLion to Smile.io |
|---|---|---|
| Customer profiles | Export from Smile with points balances | Sync automatically from Shopify, with no separate Smile account |
| Current points balance | Can transfer via CSV | Can import via CSV with email and points columns |
| Earning and redemption history | Check with LoyaltyLion | Doesn’t transfer |
| VIP tier status | Needs manual mapping | Can import via CSV |
| Birthdays | Check with LoyaltyLion | Can import via CSV |
| Earning rules and rewards | Need rebuilding | Need rebuilding |
| Klaviyo flows | Built by LoyaltyLion’s team on Classic | Need rebuilding yourself |
| Customer accounts | Must be created and activated before points can be used | Not needed, as guests can hold balances |
To make the switch easier, follow this sequence:
- Export your data: In Smile, go to Customers and use Filter and export to download your customers’ points balances. In LoyaltyLion, export your customer and points data, or ask support for the file.
- Prepare the import: Smile needs a CSV with email and points columns, uploaded after your customers have synced. Smile imports can’t be reversed, so check the file first. For LoyaltyLion, contact [email protected] on Classic, or your onboarding manager on Advanced or Plus.
- Rebuild your program: Recreate earning rules, rewards, VIP tiers, referral offers, and integrations such as Klaviyo.
- Test with a small group: Check balances and redemptions with 10–20 customer accounts, including at least one POS redemption if you sell in store.
- Tell customers what’s changing: Explain where to find their points, and contact your most active redeemers first. If you’re moving to LoyaltyLion, run an account activation campaign, because imported customers appear as guests until they activate.
- Go live and cancel your old app: Make sure customers can’t earn in both programs, and cancel in line with your contract terms.
Migration support depends on which plan you’re moving to. LoyaltyLion estimates around three weeks for a typical migration and advertises an offer for brands switching from Smile. Smile includes migration and launch planning on Plus, while smaller merchants generally handle their own points imports.
Timing matters more when you’re leaving LoyaltyLion. Its paid plans run on 12-month terms, so start planning at least 30 days before your renewal date.
Which Shopify loyalty app should you choose?
Here’s a quick recommendation based on what your store needs:
| Your store or requirement | Recommended app | Why choose it? |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple storefronts | LoyaltyLion | Native cross-store rewards |
| Klaviyo-led retention | LoyaltyLion | Team-built flows on Classic |
| Done-for-you setup | LoyaltyLion | Managed onboarding and page design |
| Published pricing at every volume | Smile.io | Prices published up to 7,500 orders, with set overage |
| Shopify POS in several locations | Smile.io | POS on every plan, compared with Advanced for LoyaltyLion |
| VIP tiers at a list price | Smile.io | Included on Growth at $199/month |
| Free referrals | Smile.io | Referrals included on Free |
| More free order capacity | LoyaltyLion | Higher recommended limit |
| Month-to-month billing | Smile.io | No standard 12-month commitment on most plans |
Final verdict: Smile.io or LoyaltyLion?
Smile.io is the stronger choice if you want predictable costs and control over your loyalty program. You can start small, add features as you grow, and keep managing the program in-house. Just watch the plan jumps as your order volume increases, and compare Growth with Plus before committing to either.
LoyaltyLion is harder to justify on price alone. Its value comes from the service around the software: specialists build your loyalty page and Klaviyo flows, while higher plans support cross-store rewards. If those capabilities solve real problems for your team, get a quote and compare it with Smile Plus.
The decision ultimately comes down to who will run your loyalty program and what you need it to do as your store grows. Don’t pay for managed support you won’t use, but don’t underestimate the time and resources required to manage everything yourself.
FAQs
Is Smile.io or LoyaltyLion better for Shopify?
Smile.io is better for most single-store brands under about $5M a year, because it’s cheaper, quicker to set up, and easier to manage in-house. LoyaltyLion is a better fit for brands with multiple storefronts or teams that want specialists to handle loyalty setup and Klaviyo flows.
What is the biggest difference between Smile.io and LoyaltyLion?
The biggest difference is who does the work. Smile.io is self-serve software with published prices. LoyaltyLion pairs its software with a service team that designs your loyalty page and builds your Klaviyo flows, and it quotes most stores individually.
Which is cheaper at 1,000 orders a month?
Smile.io, at $79 a month on Standard. LoyaltyLion’s Classic plan costs $199 for 500 orders and allows about 625 before a pricing review, so at 1,000 orders you need a quote.
Which app has the better free plan?
Smile’s free plan has more program, including referrals and 10 reports, but stops at 200 orders. LoyaltyLion’s recommends 400 orders and doesn’t enforce it, but pays points for only three activities.
Does LoyaltyLion have features Smile.io doesn’t?
Yes, LoyaltyLion offers native cross-store rewards on Plus, team-built Klaviyo flows on Classic. It supports platforms beyond Shopify, including Magento and WooCommerce. It also offers automatic program translation into more than 130 languages on Advanced and Apple and Google Wallet passes as a paid add-on. Smile.io focuses more heavily on its Shopify loyalty offering.
Which is better for multi-store setups?
LoyaltyLion, because cross-store rewards on Plus let customers earn in one affiliated store and redeem in another. Smile has no native cross-store equivalent, so each storefront operates its own program.
How hard is it to switch from Smile.io to LoyaltyLion, or back?
It’s manageable if you time it. Points balances move by CSV either way, but earning rules and integrations need rebuilding, and customers moving to LoyaltyLion must activate a store account before they can use their points. Leaving LoyaltyLion also means working around a 12-month term.
Which app delivers better ROI?
Neither app has independent proof of better ROI. Smile says members repeat at a rate 56% higher than non-members, and LoyaltyLion says members spend up to 40% more, but both compare your most engaged customers with everyone else. Revenue stage is a more useful filter. At an $80 average order value:
- Under $1M a year (under about 1,000 orders a month): Smile.io, because Free, Essential, and Standard cover this volume.
- $1M to $5M (about 1,000–5,200 orders): Smile.io on Growth at $199–$699, or LoyaltyLion if you want Klaviyo flows built for you.
- $5M to $20M (about 5,200–20,800 orders): LoyaltyLion for cross-store rewards and managed support, compared with Smile Plus above 6,500 orders.
